Job Description
Our UK&I T&D team is spread across Aberdeen, Ashford, Basingstoke, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Croydon, Dublin, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds, London Aldgate, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Plymouth, St Albans.
The Role
AECOM is recruiting for a primary plant focused Associate Director to join our UK Transmission and Distribution (T&D) department. Our T&D team delivers HV design for electrical power projects at transmission and distribution voltage levels. The focus of this role is primary plant design for large-scale infrastructure, grid connections, and private networks at voltage levels normally between 132 kV to 400kV. Typical projects include feasibility, optioneering, FEED, detailed design, and design assurance on existing or new substations and other infrastructure.
Our work typically comes from:
- Large projects and frameworks with transmission network operators mostly in UK and Ireland but also in Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East.
- Client and owners engineer role on construction of HV infrastructure
- Connections of renewable generation and hyperscale data centres
- Internal AECOM clients delivering large industrial and electrification projects
In addition, to the engineering responsibilities, this role includes some support to bidding, project, and quality management.
Required/Essential Skills & Experience
- Previous experience with consultancy, contractor, or utility in the energy sector. Client experience with National Grid, SHET, SSE, SPT or any other transmission utility or developer in UK or Ireland.
- 10 Years plus experience as FEED designer, detailed design, or owner’s engineer role in HV substation design.
- Experience designing HV infrastructure at concept and FEED and detailed design stages.
- Understanding of electrical AC HV Plant infrastructure and equipment both AIS and GIS.
- National Grid Design Assurance authorisation such as LCDAE, CDAE, TP137 or TP141
- Ability to work flexibly across multiple projects.
- Chartered status
- Full driver licence.
- Mentoring/Leading a team of younger/less experienced engineers.
- Honors Degree in Electrical Engineering.
A Secondment to HV utilities or developers may also be an option for this role.

Desirable Skills & Experience
- Project management (incl. budget and quality).
- Proposal/Bid development including leading multi discipline proposals to completion.
- Working as part of a team and have a client-focused mindset customer facing skills.
- Experience of managing multi-discipline engineering projects
- Experience of design & site construction review, the role is primary plant focused, but knowledge and understanding of secondary system design will be advantageous.
- Control systems, transformers, HVDC systems, interconnectors, HV Protection & Control knowledge and experience would be advantageous.
