Job Description
AECOM Buildings + Places is seeking a Senior Project and Proposal Manager to join our team. This position is based out of our Markham office with opportunities for remote / hybrid work permitted.
About The Role
AECOM is seeking a dynamic, open minded “can-do” Project and Proposal Manager who is defined by their passion and persistence in delivering and winning architectural and engineering design services. Those with a “seller-doer” mind set and an appetite for business development would be an ideal fit for this role!
This role is a critical position in support of our private sector business. You will reside within our Buildings and Places Project Delivery Group, collaborating with our Engineering Leads, Operations and Marketing Managers who will provide technical input, leadership and strategic support to help you succeed. This key position is an approximate 80/20 split role with a focus on project management and proposal/capture management, designed to support the development of market share and building top-line revenue for AECOM. In addition to supporting initiatives that source out new business you will also lead the delivery of some of our highest profile projects. The role requires extensive relationship-building skills and account capture strategies that create outstanding proposals, in addition to project management skills and processes that deliver on our commitments.
As a Proposal Manager, you will be both a primary contributor and leader to our technical teams in our response to opportunities within AECOM’s private sector practice area, driving market growth and revenue. This is an ideal role for a true champion with an ability to use their skills and experience to contribute to this is already successful practice area. As a Project Manager you will be a part of a talented, multi-disciplinary team of Architects, Urban Planners and Engineers working on projects within our private sector practice spanning a variety of building typologies and clients. This role offers a chance to be at the forefront of exciting endeavours that strive for excellence in design and embrace sustainability with an opportunity to collaborate and exchange ideas with global experts.
This position has significant expected opportunities for advancement and professional growth within the AECOM organisation. You will be responsible for managing, coordinating and directing the Design and Proposal teams throughout the entire project and proposal lifecycle.
Major Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the overall planning, coordination and control of projects from inception to completion, with the goal of producing functionally and financially viable projects that are completed on time within authorized cost and to the required degree of quality.
- Manage and drive financial performance of assigned projects.
- Manage scope, schedule, budget, quality, safety, and change management while building strong client relationships.
- At a project level, provide clear guidance to designers and technical staff to meet client objectives.
- Manage project teams to produce fully coordinated working drawings and project specifications.
- Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing with our clients, our project teams, our sub consultants and construction contractors.
- Preparation of design and contract documents, document checking and verification, conduct construction review and contract administration throughout the duration of a project.
- Communicate with construction team to provide information and help resolve problems.
- Establish and maintain solid working relationships and communication with technical staff, managers, and peers, regularly interacting with all levels of management, functional POCs and clients with a high degree of tact and diplomacy.
- Write and coordinate winning proposals, attract new clients and retain existing clients as required.
- Gather, assess, and validate client requirements and constraints while working closely with client account managers (CAMs) to ensure a winning solution.
- Work with sector leadership to execute capture lifecycle activities, including the development of value propositions, call plans, price-to-win analyses, business cases, and project plans that drive win strategies.
- Assess win probability, develop win plans/strategies, and address gap analysis to win business with new and existing clients.
- Work with marketing to translate voice-of-customer requirements into proposal strategies and win themes.
- Drive all aspects of the capture successfully through the AECOM Win Process.
- Interact routinely with all levels of divisional, operational and group management, infrastructure POCs, staff, and clients, and follow through on tasking.
- Brief capture status to senior management at specified milestones in the capture process, when material changes occur and as needed and for key gate reviews.
- Typically manages projects involving RTF (Risk Triggering Factors).
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, applicants must possess, at a very minimum:
- No less than a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or Engineering plus six (6) years of experience managing multiple projects of various types and complexities for commercial clients, among other sectors.

Preferred Qualifications and Attributes:
- Prefer twelve (12) years of experience managing multiple projects of various types and complexities for commercial clients, among other sectors.
- You are a self-starter that thrives under pressures, exhibits tenacity, zeal and takes pride in achieving what many consider impossible.
- Architectural or Engineering designation.
- PMP accreditation.
- Experience in managing large complex private sector client building programs is an asset.
- Technical knowledge of building construction and the Ontario Building Code.
- Experience fast-tracking building and environmental permitting and experience working with municipal approvals.
- Familiar with construction administration protocols.
- Business acumen.
- Demonstrable experience delivering winning proposals.
- High level of literacy regarding financial reporting and workplan composition.
- Ability to work within a team environment, ability to co-ordinate with a multi-disciplinary in-house consultant team.
- Excellent communication, presentation and organizational skills.
- Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.
- Ability to multi-task combined with strong attention to detail and time management skills.
- High level of sound and independent judgment and reasoning.
- Strong, hands-on technical knowledge, document review, consultant coordination and experience in field review and contract administration.
- Dedicated, with an all-hands-on-deck attitude towards completing the work efficiently and accurately.
- Strong computer skills, including a working knowledge of scheduling (MS Project), word processing (Word) and spreadsheet (Excel) software applications.
