Job Description
AECOM is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to be based in Orange, CA; Denver, CO; Columbus, OH or Cleveland, OH.

The Mechanical Engineer will be capable of working with limited supervision to complete project design requirements. The ideal candidate will have a passion for design mechanical systems and will be responsible for leading small projects for new facilities and renovation, modernization, and repurposing of existing buildings. On larger projects, this person will support the Senior Engineer, as needed. This person must be well organized, able to demonstrate critical thinking, quickly recognize issues and be part of the solution.
The Engineer knows how to perform the technical calculations and design, understands the project requirements and the effort required to complete the work. The candidate should be able to design the projects from concept up to construction and delivery to the Client. Candidate should be capable of working independently with limited supervision to complete both small and large complex projects. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with internal and external clients is required. Candidate must be well organized, be able to demonstrate critical thinking and can quickly recognize issues and be part of the solution.
Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:
- Mechanical engineering from conceptual design through construction administration and post-occupancy
- Be competent in all aspects of mechanical systems design for a variety of types of projects or markets to complete routing engineering assignments and calculations
- Strong understanding of applicable codes and standards relevant to mechanical engineering
- Ability to independently perform specific and moderate portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer.
- Ability to work on concurrent projects.
- Develops designs within a BIM design environment.
- Develops, designs, and specifies equipment, components and materials for projects in conjunction with correlating basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures and in alignment with engineering design and performance specifications.
- Coordinates with other disciplines to produce complete and well-coordinated documents.
- Organizes and conducts site visits for the purpose of data collection and evaluation of mechanical systems, equipment, components, and materials for projects with and without well-defined scopes
- Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered using modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignments. Identifies discrepancies in results.
- Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule with little supervision.
- Completes assigned engineering and design tasks in accordance client specified criteria and applicable codes and standards
- Attend meetings with owners, clients, or architects as needed
- Review submittals (shop drawings, etc.) to determine conformance with construction documents.
- Research, design, and evaluate mechanical products, equipment, systems, and processes to meet requirements, apply knowledge of engineering principles.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
BA/BS in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or similar field + 4 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
Preferred Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
EIT and or PE Certificate
5+ years of mechanical engineering experience within an A/E consulting or design-build firm
Experience with Revit and AutoCAD based design projects
Competent in all conventional aspects of mechanical engineering and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard mechanical engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria
Experience in designing complex hydronic systems, steam, VRF systems and sustainable designs. This includes cooling towers, water cooled chillers, air cooled chillers, hot water and steam boilers, geothermal systems, etc
Excellent communication skills: articulate, assertive, and confident
Creative thinker with effective teamwork skills
Experience with LEED and sustainable design
Ability to use load calculation software such as Trace700 and other energy modeling softwares such as eQuest, IES is a plus.
Plumbing and Fire Protection system design experience
Analyze equipment energy use for optimizing systems
Project related travel may be required for this position
