  • Create Community Schools designed to strengthen local schools by removing barriers to student success;
  • Facilitate collaboration and partnership among many stakeholders to strengthen the local education landscape; and
  • Advance key educational policy

Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Deputy Director of PHLpreK reports to the PHLpreK Director and supports the design and implementation of PHLpreK, the City of Philadelphia’s quality pre-K initiative. The Deputy Director’s work will be guided by the principle that investments in quality pre-K provide long-term gains for students and reduce the gaps in school readiness faced by many children. Studies illustrate significant benefits for children who participate in quality early education programs such as increased performance in school, improved social and emotional skills, fewer behavioral problems, decreased need for special education, increased high school graduation rates, and increased earning potential. The Deputy Director of PHLpreK will support day-to-day program operations and serve as a thought leader to the PHLpreK Director to strengthen the initiative and meet short and long-term program goals.

SALARY - Commensurate with education and experience

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Support PHLpreK systems development to plan for future expansion 
  • Support the day-to-day administration of PHLpreK including, but not limited to student recruitment and monitoring provider compliance
  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of a workforce development strategy that addresses the needs of a skilled, credentialed early childhood education workforce 
  • Supervise several team members and lead various working groups across City agencies 
  •  Provide leadership in the development and implementation of a Comprehensive Services Plan for participating PHLpreK providers 
  • Represent the Mayor’s Office of Education at public events and meetings 
  • Monitor and interpret local, federal, and state policy and regulations related to early education program administration
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the PHLpreK Director or City’s Chief Education Officer

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience and at least two years’ experience in a supervisory role in the field of education or within non-profit/government as an administrator or practitioner
  • Experience as an education practitioner or administrator of large programs 
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced degree in education, public administration/government, management or related field preferred.
