Agency Description

The Managing Director’s Office (MDO) manages and oversees the operations of the City, including the Rebuild Office, which is a staff exclusively focused on the implementation of the Rebuild initiative.

Rebuild is an initiative of the MDO to improve physical conditions in selected parks, recreation centers and libraries.  Rebuild is expected to invest hundreds of millions of dollars over the course of the initiative and a new office was created to carry out Rebuild’s work. In addition to revitalizing neighborhood public spaces, Rebuild is focused on using the projects it funds to empower and engage with community members and to promote economic opportunity for diverse businesses and individuals. Rebuild projects are carried out by a variety of partners, including consultants, nonprofit partners, and other City agencies. Rebuild works closely with the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation (PPR), the Free Library of Philadelphia (FLP) and other City departments.

To meet its goals, Rebuild is piloting different ways to deliver capital projects to neighborhoods with the most need, engaging with community members, and investing in supports to create economic opportunity for diverse businesses and Philadelphians. These new approaches are creating learning opportunities so that lessons and best practices can be applied to larger public and private capital projects.

Job Description

The Director of Grants and Philanthropic Engagement will be responsible for leading Rebuild’s fundraising efforts. This will include updating and executing a fundraising strategy, working with partner organizations and departments to identify and pursue new funding opportunities, cultivating relationships with donors, and overseeing all reporting and relationship management with donors.

This position will work closely with Rebuild’s Executive Director and the rest of the leadership team.

Essential Functions

  • Review and update Rebuild’s fundraising strategy
  • Research and conduct outreach to prospective donors
  • Develop and maintain a system to track donor prospects and funder outreach
  • Coordinate and collaborate with Rebuild partners (e.g. other funders, nonprofit partners, other departments) to pursue funding opportunities
  • Work with Rebuild staff and partners to develop compelling, feasible projects and opportunities for donors to invest in
  • Lead all grant-writing and development of donor requests
  • Manage donor relationships and serve as primary point of contact for current and prospective donors
  • Work with Finance and Administration staff to track funding commitments, ensuring that dollars are disbursed and spent in a timely manner and according to all requirements and restrictions on donated funds
  • Work with Communications and Finance staff to ensure that all funders receive narrative and financial updates in a timely manner
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • B.A. or B.S. degree required
  • Minimum of 6 years experience in fundraising or donor relations
  • Track record of success in major gifts fundraising and prior experience cultivating, soliciting and stewarding contributions from both individual and institutional funders
  • Experience managing large, complex projects with evidence of superb organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative orientation toward internal and external constituencies
  • Proven success working under tight timelines in a fast-paced environment

  • Collaborative: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, such as other departments, partners and sponsors, the public, local, civic and business officials, and news organizations.

  • Creative and Critical thinker: proven ability to work through complex problems/ tasks and the ability to prioritize and multi-task to meet deadlines
  • Adaptable: ability to understand and respond quickly to changes in the environment or direction; ability to toggle between big picture and details; able to be motivated about many different kinds of tasks and projects; self-starter with the flexibility to work independently and as part of a team
  • Effective Communication: strong oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, high level of emotional intelligence, and a track record of building effective relationships with diverse people
  • Facile with electronic tools: Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite required; excellent skills in Excel and PowerPoint; experience with VAN a plus

  • Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of this position
  • Valid PA driver’s license
