The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan serves as a common solicitor, storehouse and distributor of food on behalf of its Partner Agencies which are non-profit, charitable organizations serving those in need.

Today the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan provides over 40 million pounds of food each year to those in need through more than 700 partner agencies. Partner Agencies consist of local soup kitchens, shelters, and food pantries who strive to feed the more than 300,000 people in eastern Michigan who are food insecure. The excellent relationships established within the Food Bank’s 22 county service area and throughout the state has allowed for numerous programs and initiatives to help fight hunger.

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Development is responsible for the overall coordination, management, and supervision of the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan’s development and marketing teams. They will plan, direct, and measure the fundraising activities. This position will ensure superior customer service to all internal team members and other stakeholders of the organization. All activities will support the organization’s mission, culture, and strategic plan objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Create and maintain a positive work environment in alignment with the company core values.

• Responsible for supervision and direction of team members within the Development and Marketing Departments; including hiring, training, evaluating, coaching, and holding accountability within the departments.

• Responsible for all new hire training and recertification of current staff, in partnership with Compliance & Safety Specialist and Human Resources.

• Assist the Chief Development Officer in the successful development and implementation of both short and long-term strategic and department plans that match the Food Bank's vision, mission, values, and budgetary requirements.

• Assist the Chief Development Officer in the successful development and implementation of both short and long-term strategic and department plans that match the Food Bank's vision, mission, values, and budgetary requirements.

• Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer to establish annual fundraising goals and provide direction, oversight and effectiveness of the Food Bank's fundraising activities including: annual campaign, grants, direct mail, corporate sponsorships, and special events.

• Responsible for the reporting of administrative activities such as annual budget, strategic plan and department materials as requested.

• Direct the branding, messaging, and communications of the Food Bank, both internally and externally.

• Serve as a department representative to the Board of Directors, related agencies and the general public.

• Create a culture of philanthropic giving both internally and externally.

• Build working relationships with internal constituents to enhance information exchange between FBEM departments.

• Evaluate effectiveness and ROI for all donor contact points to maximize staff efficiencies and ensure a donor centered relationship.

• Support accurate donor records and donor stewardship documentation, per department policies.

• Maintain a system of internal controls and departmental operating procedures to ensure fiscal responsibility and confidentiality.

• Identify, develop, and implement strategies to cultivate prospective donors, while also recognizing and stewarding current and past supporters.

• Build community awareness through a multifaceted marketing and social media campaign that establishes the Food Bank as a leader in its field.

• Ensure volunteer activities provide a positive and consistent experience with opportunities for further engagement and relationship building.

• Ensure compliance with rules and regulations from oversight or governing agencies, such as Feeding America and the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

• Attend appropriate workshops and seminars to enhance professional development.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION

• Master's degree or related years of experience required. • Course work or professional certification in related field highly preferred.

• Minimum of five years in a development or marketing role (preferably with a nonprofit) and three years in a management role.

• Valid driver’s license

WORK EXPERIENCE

• Demonstrated experience working directly with a Board of Directors, high-level donors and/or volunteers in cultivating relationships.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Strong analysis, planning, team building, and communication skills.

• Genuine appreciation of FBEM's mission and the ability to communicate it.

• Demonstrated leadership and excellent interpersonal skills.

• Ability to handle multiple priorities and work independently.

• High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office and Donor Data Base.

• Ability to interact with the public and the media in a positive manner, in both large and small groups.

• Sensitivity, tact, diplomacy, and the ability to honor confidentiality.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Standard office environment and frequent meetings occasionally held outside of the office.
