Job Description

Responsible to: Program Director, Regional Program Manager

Direct Reports: Indonesia Program Coordinator, 2 Indonesia-based Field Support Officer Volunteers

Working closely with: GR staff: other technical leads, the program team

Partners: World Education Indonesia, Keling Kumang Credit Union; other partners as identified

Scope of position: The Agribusiness Lead is responsible for the development and delivery of Good Return’s work with smallholder farmers in collaboration with partner agencies. This is a full time position with an initial 1-year contract, and is intended to lead to a long-term role.

Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia - with up to 50% time travelling in Asia-Pacific region (primarily Indonesia)

Good Return’s Agribusiness Strategy:

Our goal is to improve the financial well-being of smallholder farmers by strengthening agricultural practice, access to markets and appropriate finance. To achieve this we will: 

  • Support farmers to access markets and information, and negotiate for fair prices and terms 
  • Enable farmers to improve agricultural practices to increase yields, and minimise costs and harmful environmental impacts 
  • Ensure farmers can access finance that is appropriate to their needs 
  • We will reach farmers with and through our financial service provider partners. We will strengthen our program in Indonesia, and expand to 1-2 other locations over the next 3 years.

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the technical direction and delivery of Good Return’s Agribusiness strategy
  • Oversee the identification, planning and implementation of activities with partners Keling Kumang Credit Union and World Education Indonesia (with a focus on the palm oil sector)
  • Stay abreast of developments in the sector and actively participate in and contribute to sector-level activities, with an emphasis on human centred / behavioural approaches to agribusiness and the use of technology
  • Build the capability of the Good Return team and partner agency staff in Agribusiness approaches
  • Liaise with the Good Return program management team to ensure agribusiness considerations are integrated across our program of work as relevant
  • Identify and pursue new program development opportunities, including through active liaison with sector stakeholder and development of funding proposals
  • Contribute to monitoring, evaluation, learning and reporting processes as required

Qualifications

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong understanding of and experience with approaches to smallholder agribusiness development in a developing country context
  • Exposure to and experience with human centred / behavioural approaches, and the use of technology to drive market access and promote good agricultural practices.
  • A degree in a relevant field, such as agricultural economics, agriculture, business
  • Good interpersonal skills, and experience managing a team and contributing to team culture
  • Extensive cross-cultural experience, awareness and skills
  • Strong time management skills to manage priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate in Bahasa Indonesian an advantage
