Job Description

Our Principal Engineer role is located in Hebron, IL which is just north of Woodstock, IL and south of Lake Geneva, WI. Remote hybrid schedule is available with 3 days onsite per week and 2 days remote.

 

This position is inside the Engineering group and will report directly to the Technology Transfer Manager.  The primary objective will be to drive organic growth efforts in the Medical Division’s high-growth Business Segments. This position will be responsible for the product development process with particular emphasis on the transfer to manufacturing and product launch.

This is a highly strategic role within the ITW Medical business and provides a path for driving meaningful impact within the business, while accelerating career growth.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead for the development, modification, implementation and supporting of single use medical device components through adherence to established design control processes and good engineering practices.
  • Customer: Drive improvements in current products by working directly with customer technical teams to identify and solve problems through innovative problem solving and product design to create sustainable differentiation. Understand customer requirements and translate those requirements into product designs, while using Design Control and ensuring value is delivered to customer and patient.
  • Ensure Design for Manufacturability through close collaboration with R&D and Operations Teams. Effectively perform design transfer.
  • Conduct FMEA and Risk analysis as a part of the design control process.
  • Lead the technical process development with internal manufacturing partners.
  • Lead others to solve technical problems using engineering and statistical techniques.
  • Interfaces with customers and suppliers on high-volume disposable medical component design and is constantly evaluating new technologies and processes.
  • Leads design changes to existing products, ensuring compatibility through appropriate validation.
  • Provides engineering and technical support to production team with respect to product specifications and requirements.
  • Concept Design: Support product development from concepts through various stages of prototyping to final design by applying sound and good engineering principles including product requirements, concept design and selection, prototyping, testing, etc.
  • Business Acumen: Ability to translate customer needs and pain points into a value proposition that can be supported with a strong business case is a must for this role.
  • Team Work: Serve as a lead technical role on the project team. The incumbent will work closely with fellow Engineers, Customers, Sales and Manufacturing regarding New Product Development.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Plastics, Biomedical) required
  • A minimum of 8+ years related work experience required
  • Previous experience with injection molding in a high-volume manufacturing environment required. Experience with high-volume medical device manufacturing strongly preferred.
  • Fluency in 3D CAD (Solidworks preferred)
  • Working understanding of part design layout and GD&T
  • Understanding of DFMEA & PFMEA methodology and approach
  • Injection mold tooling design experience preferred
  • Mold-flow analysis experience is a plus
  • Ability to train and coach others from technical expertise
  • Self-directed with creative problem-solving ability
