Job Description

Interlochen Public Radio, an award winning network of six stations serving much of northern Michigan with two 24-hour public radio services, is seeking a news reporter/producer to connect with our local, regional, and worldwide audience on-air and through related media. This individual will produce stories for broadcast and online. The successful candidate will join a team committed to local news in northern Michigan.

The Opportunity: Interlochen Public Radio is a charter member of NPR and has grown steadily with the extraordinary support of a highly-engaged public radio listening audience and its parent organization, internationally renowned Interlochen Center for the Arts.

In its fifty-first year of operation, Interlochen Public Radio and its parent organization, the Interlochen Center for the Arts, are focusing on the future while celebrating the past.   A working group of ICA leadership, including the president, trustees, and senior administrators in broadcasting, marketing and communication, and technology, are working with external thought partners to create a comprehensive strategy for the new synergies that exist between broadcasting, education and media -- online and web, social media, and virtual learning.  Interlochen and IPR as media and education organizations are uniquely positioned for this work.

ICA received the National Medal of Art in 2006. IPR has won 46 news reporting and programming awards since 2003 and has been named “Public Radio Station of the Year in Michigan” for the last three consecutive years -- and 7 of the last 10-- by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.

The Position: The reporter/producer must have a confident, engaging on-air presence and solid journalistic judgement. The successful reporter/producer will present a continually fresh and interesting focus to daily news programming using the full range of resources and media at his or her disposal. The position will require the producer/host to:

  • Discover and report local news in an effective, engaging way to provide listeners with useful information.

  • Present news and information programming with a strong sense of place in northern Michigan, as a part of the cultural community engaged with Interlochen Center for the Arts, all related to the larger world.

  • Help develop and implement online media engagement efforts to innovate the listener experience by actively engaging audiences.

  • Participate in listener and donor engagement activities, online and in the community.

  • Remain connected and knowledgeable about the professional world of public broadcasting and media distribution, and in creating new audiences for public radio.

  • Occasionally produce and host the daily news service on IPR (other rotations may be required to meet staffing needs).

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree.

  • Three years of public radio news experience.

  • Fluency in the use of broadcast technology and the social media tools that actively engage the audience of today.

  • Be organized, punctual, creative, personable, curious, ambitious, and willing to lead and educate listeners in new directions.

  • Work in a close knit, collaborative environment with other IPR professionals and with colleagues in related areas with good humor and sensitivity.

Additional Information

SALARY and COMPENSATION: Nationally competitive with station class, with generous health and retirement benefits.
