Job Description

Interlochen Center for the Arts is seeking to hire a Learning Specialist for Interlochen Arts Academy. This position will provide support and programming to students with learning differences, their families and their teachers. The Learning Specialist will report to the Director of Education Programs and Student Academic Support.


The Learning Specialist will have the following responsibilities:

  • Reading educational testing  reports and help determine what educational support a student may need.
  • Writing condensed versions of reports for use with teachers.
  • Spending time in classrooms and working with teachers, academic counselors, administrators, counseling and psychological staff and residence life staff.
  • Talking with and meet with parents to explain concerns interpret test results and/or make referrals.
  • Developing a program for students who need educational support.
  • Coordinating additional tutoring efforts (beyond normal evening faculty tutorials and flex time support).
  • Coordinating accommodations for national standardized testing
  • Attend Core Team meetings and other meetings as needed
  • Participating in the review process of applicants to determine appropriate support if student is admitted.
  • If needed, teaching one class for students who  may need regular or daily contact with the learning specialist.

This position will work with students, parents, teachers and school psychological support services. It is important that the Learning Specialist have the ability to manage difficult and emotional human interactions. Within this position the Learning Specialist will need to be able to make recommendations about how to best work with students and, in some cases, decisions about the limits of what support the school can offer.

Qualifications

  • MA level degree required in the area of special education and learning disabilities
  • Experience working in an independent school greatly preferred
  • Knowledge of laws regarding ADA and management of IEPs and other educational learning plans
  • Ability to work well with parents, students and teaching faculty
