Job Description

Interlochen Center for the Arts is seeking to hire a Director of the Dance Division of Interlochen Arts Academy and the Summer Arts Camp. Interlochen seeks a dancer/educator/administrator of extraordinary depth, competence and vision for this key leadership position. The Director will oversee, develop and promote all aspects of the Dance program for both the Interlochen Arts Academy and the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, as well as the one week Dance Institute prior to Camp.   


Responsibilities for the Director of the Dance Division includes the following:

  • Recruiting, hiring, orienting and evaluating dance faculty and staff
  • Providing innovative leadership in the direction, evaluation and development of the dance program curriculum and experiences
  • Staying relevant with the dance community in realistically preparing students for their future
  • Monitoring student experience and achievement
  • Developing and managing the annual departmental budget
  • Scheduling and engaging guest artist-faculty
  • Managing IAA and IAC dance enrollments with the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid
  • Working with leadership in presentations and festivals, public broadcasting and Interlochen
  • College to create a strong virtual presence for the dance program through broadcasting, podcasts, seminars and distributed media.
  • Teaching/staging or choreograph during the Academy school year and the summer programs.
  • Making major decisions about curriculum, programming for both the Academy and the Camp programs
  • Working with parents and with Residence Life staff in some cases where there are disciplinary or health issues regarding a dance student
  • Representing Interlochen and its dance program at the highest level

Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in dance, with demonstrated and proven leadership in teaching and administrative experience.
  • Professional performance experience and a strong in background in dance pedagogy.
  • Experience with choreography is required and will be strongly considered.
  •  Significant knowledge of the trends, practices and pedagogies of dance education and dance performance at the national and international level
  • Ability to build strong networks and partnerships with the national/international dance education and performance communities
  • Exceptional written and spoken communication skills
  • Ability to advocate and represent the dance program to senior administration, alumni and balance competing program agendas and needs among a gifted and passionate faculty
  • Ability to relate to dance alumni of international reputation
  • Ability to relate to, motivate and energize students
  • Advancement of new ideas and visions in a highly competitive international environment
  • Initiate and support interdisciplinary and collaborative projects across the other artistic and academic divisions
  • Good knowledge and ability in the use of technology
