Job Description
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Investing in talent is one of KIPP DC’s top five priorities in our 2025 strategic plan. The Director of Talent Development will be responsible for developing and implementing systems that support regional staff to grow professionally and be successful in their roles. The Director will focus on systems for onboarding, professional development, performance management, and retention of HDQ employees. The Director manages the Associate Director of Talent Development, serves as a talent leader across the organization, and reports to the Chief Talent Officer. The Director of Talent Development is an exempt position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Define a vision for onboarding new regional staff and facilitate systems to support it.
In partnership with the associate director, ensure that all regional staff have the resources, expectations, and knowledge to be successful in their roles by:
Supporting and coaching hiring managers
Hosting onboarding sessions
Creating regional resources to support onboarding
Provide opportunities for KIPP DC team members to grow in their roles.
Develop and lead systems that develop KIPP DC regional staff on the HDQ Core Competencies, including but not limited to:
Training for new people managers
Bringing in partners and guest facilitators
Sharing resources and trainings outside of KIPP DC
In partnership with equity and inclusion team, support HDQ DEI professional development for regional staff
Develop vision for career pathways at KIPP DC HDQ
Ensure HDQ performance reviews and performance management systems help team members to grow and develop.
Lead annual performance review process, including communication, training, implementation, and tracking of the process
Ensure performance reviews align to organizational needs, including HDQ Competencies and future goals
Support future design and implementation of performance reviews and performance management beyond HDQ
Support both new and veteran managers with completing performance reviews, ensuring they are giving high quality feedback to their team members
Create retention and recogniation strategies for regional staff.
In partnership with HDQ Director of Culture, build on awards and current retention efforts to develop retention and recognition strategies for HDQ team members
Redesign HDQ promotions process, maintaining transparency and equity of process, with an eye toward retaining top talent
Do all of the above with an equity lens, and then in addition, support the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work of the organization.
Support KIPP DC’s DEI vision and regional equity agenda through talent development work
Serve as talent leader at KIPP DC.
Facilitate talent sessions for executive team and other regional leaders
Collaborate with other talent leaders to ensure talent systems across KIPP DC are aligned
Manage talent development budget
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
6 to 9 years of work experience in talent development, DEI, or recruiting in education or nonprofit preferred
Experience managing others preferred
Experience leading adult learning and adult facilitation
Knowledge and experience with talent development systems, with an eye toward equity and access for all team members
Experience with implementing DEI priorities within an education or nonprofit organization
Unquestioned integrity and commitment to KIPP DC’s mission, and a passion for education and a desire to help KIPP DC grow
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to one's work
Ability to work in a dynamic, fast paced environment and an eagerness to build relationships
Strong judgment and decision-making skills
Excellent strategic planning and prioritization skills
Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence, initiative, and leadership skills
Flexibility, tenacity, high quality work, resourcefulness, teamwork, and a sense of humor
Ability to travel approximately 10% and attend weekend (1-2 per month) events

When it comes to compensation, at KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. We look at compensation benchmarks in the education and non-profit sector to determine our starting salaries. The anticipated starting salary range for this position is $112,042-$138,403.

KIPP DC requires all staff to provide proof that they have had all doses of a primary COVID vaccine or obtain approval for exemption for medical or religious reasons before beginning employment. New hires who have not received all doses of a primary vaccine or who are waiting approval for exemption will not be able to begin employment.
All KIPP DC staff are strongly encouraged to stay up to date on their vaccinations. The CDC currently defines being up to date on the COVID vaccine as having had all doses of a primary vaccine and as having received a booster, if eligible.
