Job Description

SUMMARY: The Director of Academic Advising oversees campus-wide academic advising initiatives and manages professional staff while working directly with faculty advisors. This position is housed within the Center for Student Success and reports to the Associate Dean for Student Success. The Director of Academic Advising is charged with the coordination, oversight, and assessment of undergraduate advising programs and practices to ensure quality academic advising for all students. The Director will coordinate a comprehensive plan for academic advising grounded in best practices and research in advising, retention, and student success.

This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee Royal Advising, Queens’ model for first- and second-year undergraduate academic advising, in conjunction with a faculty facilitator.
  • Supervise full-time professional advisors and support their work with assigned student populations.
  • Organize and coordinate academic components of student orientation in collaboration with Student Life and faculty.
  • Develop and support a comprehensive training program for faculty advisors in collaboration with department chairs, academic deans and the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence.
  • Ensure ongoing assessment of advising with a view to continually improving its effectiveness and enhancing student experience and satisfaction.
  • Assume primary responsibility for escalated advising concerns and support readmitted students with understanding their academic progress and methods for academic recovery.
  • In collaboration with department chairs and deans, coordinate the assignment of faculty advisors for undergraduate students with declared majors.
  • Coordinate communication to students and advisors regarding academic early warning, midterm warning, and probation.
  • Maintain, update, and disseminate resources that facilitate students’ awareness and understanding of their academic standing and progress.
  • Act as a resource for campus constituencies and committees whose responsibilities relate to student retention and, as appropriate, take a leadership role in retention initiatives.
  • Serve on the University’s Student Support Team, a collaborative team of campus partners tasked with addressing alerts regarding students’ well-being and success. 
  • Represent the Academic Advising and/or the Center for Student Success at open houses, admission events, and other functions as necessary.

Non-Essential Duties

  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and university needs.

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge & Skills Required

  • At least 3 years direct experience with university advising.
  • Supervisory experience and/or successful experience as a team leader required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student development and passion for working with diverse undergraduate populations.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentational communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Strong organizational and follow-up and follow-through skills.
  • Proven ability to safeguard sensitive and confidential information.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Computer proficiency, particularly in Microsoft Office and other relevant programs.
  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, coaching, or related field required or equivalent experience and education.
