Job Description

  • Work with engineers, technologists and tradespeople to help our clients succeed in the construction of critical oil and gas infrastructure projects.
  • Provide CWB Retained Engineering Services to clients.
  • Interpret regulatory and statutory requirements, codes and customer specifications relating to manufacturing, welding, and materials.
  • Determine client requirements, prescribe and if necessary, develop testing methods to evaluate materials relative to statutory requirements, construction standards and/or good engineering practice.
  • Determine client requirements and develop testing protocols for welding procedure specifications, qualifications for welding procedure specifications and welding personnel qualifications under the direction of the Welding Services Manager.
  • Prepare and review in-house work orders that communicate testing requirements to other departments and maintain traceability of samples and related documentation.
  • Interpret laboratory test report results and provide evaluations as required.
  • Provide mentoring and guidance to Junior Technical staff.

Qualifications

Education: The individual must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in materials, metallurgical, or mechanical engineering from a recognized University (or equivalency to Canadian University) This is regarded as a fully qualified professional engineering position and the individual must be currently registered as a licensed P.Eng. with APEGA (Alberta).

Experience: This position requires a minimum of six years of relevant engineering experience

Certifications:

  • Licensed P.Eng. registered with APEGA (Required).
  • CWB Welding Engineer certification (Required).
  • CSA W178.2 Level 2 or 3 Welding Inspector Certificate of Compliance (Required).

Specific technical skills:

  • The following subject matter knowledge and technical skills are considered an asset:
    • Welding procedure development per ASME Section IX, CSA Z662, CSA W47.1/47.2/W186, AWS D1.1. 
    • In-service welding and CSA Z662 clause 7.17.
    • CSA Z662 Annex K and fracture mechanics principals.
    • Experience working within a metallurgical testing laboratory.
    • Experience working within welding / fabrication shops, foundries, forge shops or other metal manufacturing facilities.
    • Mechanical aptitude supported by background and experience.
    • Nondestructive examination use and methods.
    • Principles of postweld heat treating.
    • Able to read and understand construction drawings.
  • The engineer must have very good verbal and written communication skills in English, including grammar and composition.
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner
  • Incumbents must be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).
  • Proven ability to manage, coordinate and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment in order to meet tight deadlines.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Must demonstrate a strong working knowledge of ASME Section IX, Section VIII Div. 1, B31.1, B31.3 and CSA Z662 (including in-service welding procedure development).
  • Excellent knowledge of API, NACE and AWS codes and standards
  • Ability to compose clear and concise technical reports with attention to detail
