Background

Since 1976, St. Joseph Center has been meeting the needs of low-income and homeless individuals and families in Venice, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, and surrounding communities.  The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through comprehensive case management and integrated social service programs.  The Center enjoys broad-based community support as well as a sponsored relationship with its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.  St. Joseph Center serves approximately 6,000 individuals annually.

Multifaceted intervention, prevention, and education services are carried out at four sites on the Westside of Los Angeles.  St. Joseph Center’s integrated programs provide clients with concentrated and coordinated access to services according to the nature of their needs.

Job Description

Free Professional Culinary Training Program
St. Joseph Center in Venice, Calif., offers a FREE back-to-work, professional culinary training program. This training is designed for those who are currently unemployed or underemployed and who are motivated to seek work in the culinary industry as prep cooks and line cooks.
•    10 week program: 6 weeks in classroom and 4 weeks at externship placement.
•    Daytime classes: Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
•    Hands-on culinary training in a new 1500-square-foot teaching kitchen.
•    Classical French techniques in knife skills, stocks and sauces, cooking methods.
•    ONLY cost to students: chef uniform (chef coat and apron, hat and closed-toe shoes).
•    Offer classes approximately every 8 weeks.

Our mission is to provide working poor families, as well as homeless men, women, and children of all ages, with the inner resources and tools to become productive, stable and self-supporting members of the community. The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through comprehensive case management and integrated social service programs. The Center serves approximately 6,000 individuals annually. Multifaceted intervention, prevention, and education services are carried out at five sites on the Westside of Los Angeles. PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
o    Drug/alcohol free environment. Individuals invited to the orientation must have 90 days clean and sober at that time. You will be drug tested at the start of the program, and you must hold yourself accountable for drug testing at any point during the program. We do not recognize the use of medical marijuana.

o    You will be required to disclose information concerning your legal history for externship placement. No major crimes of violence with weapons, sexual assaults, terrorist or arsonist threats, identity theft, or warrants for arrest will be considered.

o    Mandatory housing.  Must maintain residence at same address throughout the 10 week program.

o    Able to read and write in English.

o    Individuals must be at least 18 years old.

o    Must be unemployed or underemployed.

o    Valid CA driver’s license or CA I.D. card & valid Social Security card.

o    Completion and written proof of tuberculosis test taken in the past six months (upon acceptance to the program).

o    Must be in good enough physical condition to stand, move, bend, twist, kneel, and comfortably lift 50 lbs.

o    Must be motivated to work and have an interest in the food service industry.

Upon receipt of your completed application, you will be contacted to schedule an in-person interview at St. Joseph Center. Interviews take place during the week preceding the start date of the program. Please see below for application deadlines and program start dates. We accept applications year-round but are only able to schedule interviews for one class at a time.
