Head of Product Marketing, Square

  • Full-time

Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

The Square Product Marketing Lead is responsible for leading the US PMM team to deliver the maximum possible value for Square across acquisition, growth, retention, and product development. Within Square’s broader business strategy and objectives, the Square PMM team delivers this value by conducting customer insights and market analysis to help identify and capture the most valuable opportunities across Square’s portfolio of products and target audiences. For each of these opportunities, PMMs enable cross-functional stakeholders with a well-prioritized view of target seller segments, seller Jobs To Be Done, decision criteria and journey, and differentiating proof points to ensure we go to market with winning positioning and messaging for each segment in the right channels. You will manage a team of 75+ PMMs across audiences and products, and maintain strong relationships with Square’s cross-functional leadership group. The immediate scope of this role is the US Market, but US-based PMMs sometimes lead global launches, and you will be responsible for maintaining PMM resources and community globally. You will report to Square’s Head of Marketing.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of Square’s target customer segments, the product-market fit of our products for each segment, Square’s differentiators within each segment vs. key competitors, and the biggest opportunities to grow Square’s revenue.

  • Oversee the team’s work to share this knowledge across Square to enable partner teams (Inbound and outbound Sales, Marketing, Lifecycle, etc.) to go to market effectively, and in some areas to drive go-to-market activities (e.g. industry and field events)

  • Partner with Marketing to develop a breakthrough narrative for Square across and within seller segments and use it to shape key campaigns

  • Oversee customer and market analysis and ensure they are factored into Square’s future product vision/portfolio.

  • Provide ongoing clarity to your team on Square’s strategy and associated goals, and support leads in translating this into day-to-day work planning in order to inform resource prioritization. Use this to set clear success criteria for your direct reports and the full team.

  • Ensure the [global] PMM Team has the resources, tools, and knowledge necessary to efficiently and effectively conduct all product marketing activities.

  • Maintain strong relationships with leaders across all relevant cross-functional domains, incl. Product, Marketing, Sales, Account Management, Partnerships, Analytics, and Finance & Strategy.

  • Continuously evaluate the PMM cross-functional and intra-PMM operating model to ensure PMM is delivering maximum value to Square.

  • Build/maintain a high-performing, high-energy, and collaborative PMM community across Square. Make sure the team has fun along the way!

Qualifications

You have:

  • 15-20+ years total experience, with 15+ years of progressive experience in product marketing and related fields e.g. growth strategy, sales, partnerships, marketing, etc.

  • Track record of strong leadership in the PMM function at industry leading companies, including building and managing large (40+), strategic, high-performing teams to generate revenue growth and exceed targets.

  • B2B PMM experience, including developing successful campaigns to build Sales pipeline; bonus if you also have B2C PMM experience.

  • Strong analytical and strategic planning skills, with expertise developing and executing growth-driving, full-funnel GTM strategies with a start-up mentality

  • Ability to influence decisions among cross-functional leaders, and to build strong relationships and gain alignment with large groups of stakeholders from all levels of the organization using quantitative and qualitative tactics. Willingness to escalate and relentlessly surface issues until you reach acceptable resolution, while maintaining strong relationships along the way.

  • Past examples of shaping product roadmap using customer insights and data analytics, and iterating to find product market fit.

  • Ability to inspire and unify a team via formal and informal authority, and to operate both at a strategic level and in the weeds to diagnose and fix issues.

  • A passion for enabling businesses of all sizes to be successful and strong customer empathy to understand needs and decision making.

  • Willingness to travel as needed (not more than 10% of time)
