Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

Te Wānanga o Waipapa is looking for Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Māori Studies. The successful candidate will teach into our te reo courses as well as contribute to our broader teaching programme. Alongside te reo me ngā tikanga Māori programme the ideal candidate will  have the ability to be able to contribute to one or more other areas such as mātauranga Māori,  Māori media, Māori politics, Māori performing arts, Māori research or Indigenous Studies.

Māori Studies at the University of Auckland aims to preserve and advance Māori language, cultural practices and kapa haka as well as generating new Māori and Indigenous knowledge. It seeks to support the realisation of Māori aspirations for full participation in national life as Māori and to support Tangata Tiriti by ensuring a greater understanding of the knowledge traditions of Māori and their economic, political and social realities.

Please note this is a full-time 40 hours/week, permanent position. The salary banding is between $86,979 - $127,034 depending on qualifications and experience.

About Te Wānanga o Waipapa/School of Māori Studies

We actively support Māori development by promoting and advancing our knowledge of te ao Māori through our teaching and research. In our research, we draw on mātauranga Māori and disciplinary knowledge to create new knowledge, ideas and innovations for the benefit of Māori, iwi, local, national and global communities. The Faculty of Arts hosts NZ's Māori Centre of Research Excellence Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, advancing mātauranga Māori, Māori science, kaupapa Māori and tikanga Māori research.

To be considered for the role you must have:

  • A PhD in Māori Studies or Indigenous Studies or related field
  • Fluency and advanced proficiency in te reo Māori and English
  • A developing research publication record
  • Experience in teaching at the tertiary level ideally including supervision of post-graduate students
  • Experience of working with diverse student groups
  • Sound knowledge and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and knowledge of tikanga Māori
  • A commitment to quality teaching, underpinned by a knowledge of blended and innovative teaching practices
