We have both fixed term and permanent opportunities available for people with excellent customer service and student engagement skills to join our Student Experience team in the Faculty of Science as a Student Experience Adviser. These roles are based in an open plan environment in the Faculty of Science Student Engagement and Support team. This role will look after engagement events that will give a positive student experience while students are studying with us, they will also work alongside team members within the Student Experience team, as well as the team supporting students studying with us on articulation agreements. The successful candidates will be involved with ensuring students in this cohort have a smooth transition into University life, as well as organizing student activities that will introduce students to University of Auckland life as well as life in Auckland city. Knowledge of Chinese language would be an advantage, but not necessary to apply for these roles. We have 1 permanent role and 1 fixed-term role, until 31 March 2023.

Student Experience Advisers are responsible for promoting student development and engagement by providing opportunities and services that support and encourage leadership, personal and academic development and participation with the broader life of the faculty.  

Key Accountabilities:

  • Deliver effective first year support and transition programmes including mentoring programmes and orientation
  • Promote and enhance engagement opportunities for postgraduate students
  • Facilitate access to development programmes & initiatives
  • Liaise with providers of engagement, wellbeing and pastoral care services
  • Deliver high quality events that celebrate student success
  • Liaise with faculty and central careers service
  • Support student organisations as appropriate to achieve faculty goals
  • Ensure programmes are well publicised within the faculty and across other relevant faculties
  • Promote and celebrate student successes
  • Review and provide regular reporting on the uptake and success of events and programmes and provide recommendations for improvements
  • Support the faculty to meet the requirements of the Code of Practice for Pastoral Care of International Students

Applicants will have recent experience in the planning and delivery of high volume events, a demonstrated ability to develop strong collegial relationships with providers of related services and experience in generating innovative ideas for engagement and following these through to successful outcome. A high level of engagement with our students is a primary focus for this role so you will have experience in working with student cohorts and student-led organisations and an understanding of how to foster successful relationships with these groups.

In addition, you will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills including experience with a range of traditional and social media, will be friendly and engaging, have a solid administrative background and experience providing first-class customer service.

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills

  • Experience in the delivery of high volume events
  • Experience in developing innovative and engaging programmes and initiatives in a tertiary or similar environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience working in an environment requiring high levels of customer service delivery
  • Experience and understanding of equity issues in New Zealand
  • Tertiary qualification or equivalent experience
