Position Purpose:

Responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of a Grade III Wastewater treatment plant, Spray Irrigation System, and Class II Wastewater Collection System. Serves as the backup Operator in Charge of the treatment plant, spray irrigation system and collection system.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conducts routine testing of water and records test results and maintains the plant logbook with accurate and timely entries of activities.
  • Monitors all charts, gauges, SCADA and other operating equipment and maintains calibration of plant instrumentation and on-line analyzers according to the frequency specified by permitting agencies and/or the manufacturer.
  • Evaluates all data and information pertaining to the proper operation of the facility and notify Chief Plant Operator of any abnormal conditions
  • Makes necessary adjustments ensuring the treatment processes operate in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Conducts inspection of pump stations and collection system
  • Files required regulatory documents required by assigned operating permits.
  • Responsible for maintaining property in good order to include housekeeping and grounds-upkeep.
  • Follows proper health and safety standards.
  • Ensures that all equipment is in proper and safe working order; conducts corrective and preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment.
  • Analyzes and evaluates processes and procedures; initiates or recommends new or improved practices and procedures and writes and updates SOPs.
  • Prepares reports and documents related to the work; assures work is completed according to standard utility practices and procedures.
  • Maintains records on work activities, inventories and orders chemicals, materials and supplies; prepares reports on operational and repair activities.
  • Interface with state regulatory agencies and client contacts
  • Investigates, recommends, and initiates appropriate action(s) in response to internal and external customer complaints or inquiries; develops solutions to eliminate continuing problems.
  • This is a regular, full time working position. Must be available for on-call, weekend work and call-ins.
  • Utilizes computers and software as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the candidate is exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however limited exposure to higher noise level (within OSHA standards) may occur.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • Approximately 3 years industry experience.
  • Strong mechanical and maintenance background with pumps.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions in English.
  • Good communication skills, written and oral.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • NC Grade 2 Biological Wastewater Operator Certification or higher.
  • Surface Irrigation Water Pollution Control Certification.
  • NC Grade 1 Collection System Certification or higher.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the candidate is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • The candidate is frequently required to stand; walk; climb stairs or ladders; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell.
  • The candidate may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to distinguish color, close vision and distance vision.
